The world of non-dairy milks has exploded in the last few years. With more plant based milk options available, it can get confusing knowing what to look out for and what to avoid. Today we are focusing on almond milk.
Thickeners / emulsifiers / stabalisers
Many of the so called “healthy” almond milks in the supermarkets are loaded with plenty of additives. Some of the most common ones are
carrageenan (407), gellan gum (418), mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids – glyceryl monostearate, glyceryl distearate (471), lecithins (322). There is a lot of conflicting evidence on the safety of these additives. At Pureharvest we want to ensure that our products are as simple and ‘clean’ as possible so we ensure that we stay very clear of any of the above the ensure we stick to our ethos of simple, healthy and natural products that contain no nasties.
Sugar is not all bad, in fact sugar (glucose) is the fundamental fuel for our bodies. However, unnecessarily added sugar in products can be harmful and increase your daily intake of refined sugars significantly. This may have a negative affect on health. If you are on the hunt for a lower calorie milk alternative, unsweetened almond milks are a good option.
Our unsweetened almond milk contains no added sugar and is made from a few simple, wholesome ingredients. Due to our almond milks high percentage of almonds, we don’t need to bulk it up with any of the extra additives, thickeners, emulsifiers and preservatives.
Percentage of almonds
If you have ever taken the time to read the ingredients list of various almond milks you will quickly find that most of them contain a measly 2% almonds.
