The health of our gut is very important for our overall wellbeing. More and more research is coming out on the importance on looking after our gut microbiome (1).
Our gut microbes are like the flora and fauna of our digestive tract (most importantly in the colon) and they thrive off foods containing pre and probiotics. Our gut microbes influence all aspects of health from fat balance, blood glucose levels and hormone functions (1). A diet rich in pre and probiotics will help our gut microbes flourish. Without enough of these foods in our diets our microbiome will struggle to function properly resulting in adverse health effects.
Foods that promote microbial health can be split into two distinct groups, prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotic’s are fibre that can be found in foods such as fruits, vegetables and legumes while probiotics are found in fermented foods such as yoghurts and pickles.
To help you in the right direction we wanted to put together some of our favourite recipes that are full of gut loving foods.
